In February 2020 edition of What’s Happening magazine will be recognizing and acknowledging some of the heroes in our communities, in this issue we are featuring: Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (LAWS)

Lakefield Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit organization established in 1992 by a group of five women with the goal of rescuing stray, injured and abused animals. Registered as a charity in 1993 and incorporated in 1997, the Society has grown to become a well-respected agency with over 200 members from all over the region. Mary Werner, receptionist and Board member is one of the many long-serving volunteers who give of their time and efforts devoted to lost, injured and abandoned cats and dogs.

“We are a no-kill shelter and work very hard at finding homes for even the most difficult to place animals.” LAWS is supported strictly on donations, memberships, adoption fees and revenue derived from their on-premises Thrift Shop which is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10 – 4.

“We do not receive any outside government or private sector funding,” Mary explained, “our yearly expenses for the upkeep of the buildings, medical care for animals and of course daily feeding for the animals in our care is extremely extensive so we do welcome with sincere appreciation any donations whether financial or food-wise and interested volunteers.”
